Excursion Funnels

Automated airflow systems designed to move matter through the test facility.

Excursion Funnels are specialized ventilation and matter-redirection devices found within the Aperture Science Enrichment Center. While not always explicitly named in user interfaces, these funnel-shaped air systems are integral to the automated test chamber infrastructure. They utilize high-pressure airflow to propel objects, such as Weighted Storage Cubes or energy balls, through specific pathways without direct human interaction.

Lore & Background

During the height of Aperture Science's testing era, efficiency was paramount. Excursion Funnels were developed as a way to automate the movement of test subjects and equipment between chambers without requiring a human handler for every step. This allowed GLaDOS or other AI overseers to maintain continuous flow within the facility. Over time, as power failed and maintenance ceased, many of these systems fell into disrepair. Dust accumulated in their intakes, and airflow became inconsistent. However, certain sections remained active long after the initial shutdown, continuing to push cubes through forgotten corridors or redirecting energy balls toward dormant turrets.

In Their Own Story

The cube sat still on the metal grate. Then, a low hum vibrated through the floorboards. Above, a circular vent rotated slowly, its blades catching the stagnant air of the abandoned chamber. With a sudden rush of pressurized wind, the funnel engaged. The cube slid forward, caught by the invisible current, shooting toward a waiting portal on the wall. It was just another step in an endless test.

Reader's Guide

Excursion Funnels function primarily through controlled air pressure differentials within the chamber walls. When activated, they create a stream of force capable of pushing lightweight objects like cubes or energy balls across gaps. In gameplay terms, players often encounter these systems as part of momentum puzzles. By timing their movement with the funnel's activation, subjects can be launched toward distant portals or through hazardous areas without physical contact. The funnels are typically painted in Aperture white or grey and feature spinning blades visible behind a grate. Lore suggests these devices were created to reduce human error during testing. They eliminate the need for manual cube transport, allowing the facility to run unattended. However, their reliability degrades over time, sometimes requiring players to bypass them entirely using portals.
