Conversion Gel

Three gels, three rules: bounce higher, run faster, or walk on air.

Conversion Gel is a hazardous, semi-liquid substance deployed by Aperture Science to alter the physical properties of surfaces within its test chambers. Introduced as part of an experimental initiative to expand puzzle complexity, this gel exists in three distinct varieties: Repulsion, Propulsion, and Hard Light. Rather than being a traditional tool held in hand, it is an environmental mechanic that coats floors, walls, and ceilings, fundamentally changing how the player interacts with gravity and momentum.

Lore & Background

Despite its utility in puzzle design, the substance is notoriously unstable and dangerous outside of specific application protocols. Exposure to Repulsion Gel can cause severe disorientation due to excessive vertical velocity, while Propulsion Gel presents risks of uncontrolled acceleration leading to impact trauma. The Hard Light variant, which mimics solid matter from energy beams, suggests a convergence of gel chemistry with the facility's advanced hard-light bridge technology, creating a temporary but incredibly strong surface that defies standard material expectations.

In Their Own Story

The chamber was silent save for the hum of ventilation and the rhythmic dripping of blue sludge onto the white floor. Chell adjusted her grip on the portal gun as a robotic voice announced the next phase. A nozzle extended from the ceiling, spraying a thick, iridescent coating across the far wall. It shimmered with an unnatural energy. With a deep breath, she aimed her orange portal at the gel-covered surface and fired. The blue portal adhered instantly, but when she stepped through, gravity seemed to invert, pulling her toward the floor as if it were a ceiling. She bounced off the Repulsion Gel with a force that nearly knocked the wind out of her, soaring upward until she reached the next platform.

Reader's Guide

Repulsion Gel creates high-friction surfaces that launch objects and players vertically when they land on them. It is essential for reaching elevated platforms that are otherwise inaccessible by jumping alone. Players must calculate their landing spots carefully to avoid overshooting or hitting a ceiling. Propulsion Gel reduces friction significantly, allowing players to build up immense speed across horizontal surfaces. This kinetic energy can be converted into vertical height by running onto a ramp or launching through a portal. Timing is critical, as even slight missteps can result in missing the target entirely. Hard Light Gel creates solid platforms out of thin air when struck by Hard Light Bridges. Unlike standard bridges which require two endpoints, this gel allows for complex, multi-layered structures that act as permanent flooring until the bridge is deactivated.
